The Situation

When I took on the website, the problem was bigger than one underperforming page.

The website had accumulated duplicate and overlapping content, messy blog posts, multiple pages targeting similar Virtual IOP topics, weak internal linking, and low-quality backlinks from previous SEO work.

The marketing team wasn’t necessarily aware of everything that had been built around the website over time. From the outside, the site had a legitimate behavioral healthcare brand and strong clinical services. From an SEO perspective, however, the foundation needed significant cleanup.

At the same time, the Virtual IOP California page was sitting at around #14 for a keyword with approximately 590 monthly searches.

I saw an opportunity to fix the foundation and turn that page into the strongest resource on the site for the topic.

1. I Rebuilt the Page Around the Searcher

The original page had content, but it wasn’t answering the questions someone researching Virtual IOP in California would actually have.

It was missing important information around the clinical team, insurance, program details, FAQs, and the practical questions that influence a treatment decision.

I rebuilt the page around those needs.

The layout and heading structure were changed first. Then the content was rewritten to give each important topic a clear place on the page.

The objective wasn’t to make the page longer. It was to make it more complete, easier to understand, and more relevant to the actual search.

2. I Fixed the Entity and Topic Structure

The old content mixed together mental health, addiction, detox, and other treatment concepts without making the clinic’s positioning clear.

For this page, mental health needed to be the primary treatment entity, with addiction treatment represented as a secondary service.

I reorganized the content around that hierarchy so the page had a much clearer subject and purpose.

3. I Consolidated the Virtual IOP Content

The website had several pieces of content covering variations of the same topic, including:

  • Virtual IOP for mental health
  • Virtual IOP for addiction
  • Evening Virtual IOP
  • Insurance and Virtual IOP

Instead of continuing to create separate pages, I consolidated the strongest information into the main Virtual IOP resource.

This removed unnecessary duplication and gave the primary page a much broader and more useful body of content.

4. I Cleaned Up the Internal Linking

The site had relevant pages, but they weren’t working together as effectively as they could.

I cleaned up the internal links and strengthened the connections between relevant treatment content and the Virtual IOP page.

This helped establish the target page within the wider topical structure of the website.

5. I Cleaned Up the Backlink Profile

The backlink profile revealed another problem: a history of cheap, low-quality backlinks that had been built to the site.

Before adding more authority, I reviewed the profile and cleaned up the spammy link activity that had accumulated over time.

This was important because I didn’t want to build new authority on top of a backlink profile that already contained questionable signals.

6. I Used Digital PR to Support the Authority Strategy

Once the content and website cleanup were underway, I used press-release activity as part of the authority-building strategy.

This wasn’t about relying on one press release to rank a keyword. It was one part of the broader work to strengthen the website after the cleanup.

The Result

In approximately two months, “Virtual IOP California” moved from #14 to #3.

Before

#14

After

#3

That was an 11-position improvement, taking the page from outside the first page into the top three organic results.

But the organic ranking wasn’t the only result.

The keyword also appeared in Google AI Overviews twice, while the clinic’s Google Business Profile was also gaining visibility in Google Search.

What This Project Shows

This wasn’t a case where I took a strong website and made a few on-page changes.

The website had problems that needed to be identified first: duplicate content, fragmented topics, weak internal architecture, and questionable backlink activity.

The ranking improvement came after addressing those problems and rebuilding the target page around what the searcher actually needed.

That is how I approach SEO for behavioral healthcare businesses: understand the website first, fix what is holding it back, and then build the search opportunity properly.
